The Science of Cuteness

POSTED BY josh, 15 October 2007

What makes something cute?

Most people know cuteness when they see it, but can’t describe what attributes actually make something Ultra Kawaii. However, scientists who study visual signaling think they have the cute code cracked! They say that humans respond to things that signal the following:

  • Extreme youth
  • Vulnerability
  • Harmlessness
  • Need

This little guy meets all the requirements for being cute.

Scientists say that humans are hard-wired to respond to these cute cues because we are wired to want to care for babies. Cute things are the things that subconsciously remind us of helpless little babies. An animal’s (and child’s) cuteness is it’s way to make sure that it has a better chance at survival!

But I, as a self-proclaimed cute Expert, would like to add a few more things that make an animal Ultra Kawaii:

  • Extreme fuzziness
  • Big eyes
  • Big head
  • Wobbly legs
  • Squeaky noises

So when you are out there, looking for cute animals to film and send to us, keep your eyes out for these “Cute Cues” and you are guaranteed to win the next Kama Cutzie!
